Essential Skills and Kahkewistahaw Gas (2009)

This case study focuses on the Kahkewistahaw Gas and Convenience Store, where 98 per cent of the employees are First Nations. The business, located in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, opened in 2004 with the dual mandate of creating employment for First Nations people and helping them develop the skills needed to succeed in the workplace.

The authors describe how the employees were assessed through the Test of Workplace Essential Skills (TOWES) and how they were able to improve their skills.

This document is one in a series of case studies examining Essential Skills development in the workplace.
