Nourishing the Learning Spirit: Dialogue on Learning through Spirit (2009)

May 23-26, 2008, Wanuskewin Heritage Park

In this report, prepared for the Aboriginal Learning Knowledge Centre (AbLKC), the author describes a three-day forum on engaging the spirit in learning, held at Wanuskewin Heritage Park in Saskatchewan in May 2008.

The forum was part of a research study intended to prompt discussion about how teachers might understand and engage with spiritual knowing within a variety of contexts.

The author notes that in Saskatchewan, it is mandated that Aboriginal content, perspectives and ways of knowing be included for all students in the K-12 curriculum. While discussions were not restricted to this context alone, the provincial mandate was present in participants’ minds during the forum.

In addition to summarizing points raised during the forum, the author provides a policy statement aimed at guiding educators towards an understanding of the multiple roles spirit can play in student learning.
