Roots and Connections Toolkit (2008)

This toolkit is part of the Roots and Connections program, an English as a Second Language (ESL) program aimed primarily at new Canadians who may feel isolated in Alberta’s rural communities.
The authors have included resources for both those involved in planning a program and for the program instructors.
Planning resources include sample registration forms and budgeting tools. Resources for instructors reflect their three-part roles as ESL teachers, intercultural bridges, and community connectors. For instance, the ESL section includes a learner language assessment tool; the intercultural resources section includes an analysis of the stages of adjustment for newcomers; and the community connections section includes instructions for preparing a community map.
