Workbook 5 - Essential Skills to Market Yourself with a Resume and Cover Letter (2011)

This workbook is part of a series prepared through a project designed to develop resources for people who want to look for work while strengthening their Essential Skills. Funded in part by the Government of Canada’s Office of Literacy and Essential Skills, the project was carried out by Literacy Link South Central (LLSC) in Ontario.

To use the workbook, the learner must feel comfortable using a computer and must have access to the Internet because many of the activities include the use of online resources.

The author focuses on the importance of knowing one’s audience; developing a marketing message; discover what employers see when they look at a resumé; working with keywords; creating an e-resumé; understanding the purpose of the cover letter; and learning about the essential ingredients of a cover letter.

The author also discusses the “other” e-resumé, which consists of information a prospective employer can discover simply by doing an Internet search on an applicant’s name.
