Communication in the Canadian Workplace: Part One - The Interview [Video - 21:02] (2009)

This video, about 20 minutes in length, has been prepared by Human Resources and Social Development Canada (HRSDC) to highlight the importance of effective oral communication in a Canadian workplace. The information is aimed particularly at people who are new to Canada.

The video focuses on a young man who has recently moved to Canada from China and who is being interviewed for a job at an accounting firm.

He is seen arriving at the interview, then answering the interviewer’s questions. For each stage of the interview, he is shown first responding ineffectively to the interviewer and making a bad impression. The narrator explains why his response was wrong and offers tips for improving it. Then the viewer sees the same question being asked and the young man giving a much better answer.

The video touches on such topics as preparing for an interview; maintaining appropriate tone of voice and facial expression; and dealing with challenging questions.
