Using Clear Language - Introduction (2009)

The goal of the Widening Access for Adult Literacies project, which ran in Edmonton, Alberta, from 2006 to 2009, was to find ways to make it easier for adults with literacy challenges to access programs and other community resources.

The author notes that using clear language is a key way to widen access for potential clients. That can include written communication about an agency’s services; signage; and spoken communication between staff and members of the community.

The author describes several workshops organized by project leaders, including one offered to school principals to encourage clear writing in newsletters and other documents sent home to parents.
