Essential Skills: Worth the Investment [Video - 7:31] (2011)

Find out how investing in essential skills training will help you meet the challenges of an increasingly digital workplace

This video uses real Canadian companies to show that investing in employees’ Essential Skills development makes good business sense.

Prepared by Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC), the video features interviews with representatives from companies in a variety of fields, including trucking, automotive service, sheet-metal fabrication, and printing.

One recurring theme to emerge from the interviews is that digital technology has changed the work world radically and businesses must adapt to that new reality or see their profits shrink. To succeed in business, employers have to invest in their employees on an ongoing basis.

The authors also point out that such investments pay off. For example, increasing the number of employees using computers by 10 percent will lead to a 1.3 percent increase in productivity.
