Family and Community Literacy Partnerships in Canada's North
This paper describes the work of the Nunavut Literacy Council, with a focus on Cambridge Bay, a village of 1 500 people located on the tip of Victoria Island, sixty kilometers north of the Arctic Circle in the Kitikmeot region of Nunavut.
This How to Kit is intended to help groups or individuals promote literacy in a community. This kit includes:
- Information about why literacy is important to your community.
- Key literacy messages.
- Information on how to promote literacy and who you can work with in your community.
- Ideas for promoting literacy.
The Northwest Territories Literacy Council has put together a collection of ideas for holidays that can be used for a special event. Invite parents and caregivers to come and celebrate a particular holiday by sharing and learning with their children.
Reading and picture bingos are a great way to engage children and families in learning. Included here are several bingos that can be used with children of different ages. Word Bingo can be used with children in grades 2-8. Picture Bingo can be used with young children and the Alphabet Bingo can be used with pre-school and kindergarten children.
A Plan for Community-based Literacy in Nova Scotia
At the Literacy Nova Scotia Chairs and Coordinators Symposium on November 6th, 2003, called Valuing Literacy, literacy practitioners and board chairs or their designates, from all 27 provincial networks of Nova Scotia joined directors, management and staff of Literacy Nova Scotia in shaping a strategic plan for supporting community-based literacy in the province. The product was this action plan, Collaboration for Progress.
