The Board of Directors of the National Indigenous Literacy Association (NILA) represents First Nations people, Metis people, and Inuit people from coast to coast. Through provincial representation as well as representation in all stakeholder groups, NILA is poised to respond to the vision of eradicating illiteracy in its communities.
There are different purposes for reading leading to various levels of complexity. Complexity is based on how much processing of information is required to arrive at an accurate outcome. These levels range from level 1 (the least complex) reading relatively short texts to locating a single piece of information to level 5 (the most complex) interpreting dense and complex texts and making high-level inferences and using specialized knowledge.
The Adult Working Group, the author of this report, is a committee of the Health and Learning Knowledge Centre. The purpse of this report is to make generalizations about the existing literature, both practitioner-based and academic, related to the health and learning of adults. This report also identifies gaps in this literature and makes recommendations with respect to promising lines of inquiry for the future.
In June 2005, the Canadian Council on Learning (CCL) held a Health and Learning Knowledge Centre (HLKC) consultation in Vancouver, British Columbia. At the consultation, participants agreed to establish various working groups to address the work of the HLKC. These working groups address life stages in health and learning and concentrate on settings, places, and communities where health and learning takes place.
International Graduates of Canadian Institutions and the National Workforce
This report presents the findings of the first large-scale, national study focused on the experience of international students in entering the Canadian labour market. The purpose of this research was to gain a better understanding of the experiences of international graduates in Canada as they completed their studies and attempted to enter the Canadian labour market.
Health literacy links our level of literacy with our ability to act upon health information and, ultimately, take control of our health. The Canadian Public Health Association hosted the Second Canadian Conference on Literacy and Health in Ottawa from October 17 to 19, 2004.
Recruiting and Working with Ethnocultural Volunteers
This manual has been written to help voluntary organizations make their programs attractive and accessible to ethnic minority volunteers. Many organizations were already aware of the wealth of skills and experience that minority volunteers possess, but wanted suggestions on how to incorporate new methods into their existing programs.
