This report includes more than 30 promising practices submitted and approved by the delegates attending a two-day forum entitled “In from the Margins: Promising Practices and Possibilities for Health and Learning,” held in Richmond, B.C., in March 2009.

The authors note that the promising practices appear as they were submitted and have not been evaluated by the working groups that organized the forum.

A relative has recently died of the disease and a schoolmate has been diagnosed with leukemia. The elder and the little girl discuss the truths about cancer: how one gets it; what the treatments are; and the steps that may prevent cancer in the future.

This teacher’s guide accompanies a fictional story about a 17-year-old boy who, after the suicide of a friend, contemplates taking his own life. Traditional teachings help him work through his pain and become stronger.

The guide includes questions and answers to lead discussion of the text. There are also suggestions for group activities, including making posters, preparing a journal and writing a song.

Comic Book Study: Darkness Calls (2010)

This is a study guide to accompany the comic book “Darkness Calls,” which focuses on a teenager contemplating suicide because of the pressures in his life. With the help of an Elder, he combats the evil urges that threaten to destroy him. The comic book was produced by the Healthy Aboriginal Network (HAN), a non-profit organization that promotes the health, literacy and wellness of First Nations youth through the use of visual art.
