The U.S. Department of Education, Office of Vocational and Adult Education, funds the Literacy Information and Communication System (LINCS), a national system that provides information on a variety of topics related to literacy.
This report deals with the concept of continuous improvement to build a "lean" workplace. In this context, lean describes a workplace that doesn't waste material, movement or human potential. A lean workplace can be achieved by bringing workers and management together to find creative ways to improve efficiency and quality. Engaging workers in solving problems also helps improves literacy and essential skills through informal learning.
This report is developed to assist literacy agencies and their partners in developing a Trails to Literacy project. Trails is a ‘participatory’ learning concept developed to link learner-driven literacy upgrading with community marketing.

The author discusses 40 years of Adult Education in the United States. This year, they celebrate 40 years of Adult Literacy and Literacy System that was created by the Adult Education Act of 1966, and which continues today as Title 2: The Adult Education and Family Literacy Act of the Workforce Investment Act of 1998.
Books in the Home is a program used widely in Canada. The program is based on the belief that parents are children's first and most important teachers. In this program, parents learn to read and share books with their children in positive and enjoyable ways. The program promotes reading and writing of both parents and children.
We are an Island is a collection of 41 lessons on Cape Breton Island social studies topics, including geography, history, civics and current events. Each lesson is accompanied by vocabulary exercises and comprehension questions. These activities are designed to meet outcomes specified by the Nova Scotia Adult Learning Program Levels 1 and 2.
This study uses data from the Canadian panel of the International Adult Literacy Survey to examine the relations between schooling, literacy and occupational assignment and to determine the extent to which returns to over- and under-education are in fact returns to literacy skills. Two measures of required training time for the job are used, both of which are based on detailed occupation.
This lab activity provides instruction on how to produce scatter diagrams and lines of best fit by using an Excel worksheet and Chart Wizard. The activity is part of a series developed to be used with Microsoft Office 97 software programs.
