The Post-Industrial Future and the Origins of Competency-Based Adult Basic Education in Connecticut: A Critical Perspective (1999)

This essay analyzes a major policy paper of the Connecticut Department of Education linking adult basic education with the need to equip potential employees with an increasingly complex set of "basic skills" in order to assure the state a well-qualified workforce in a "post-industrial" economy. This effort is prefaced by a brief historical overview of functional literacy since the 1930s.

Wholeness of the Individual, The: Linking Literacy and Health through Participatory Education (1998)

In 1996 a women's literacy and health project was initiated at an adult learning center in Edmonton. The main purpose of the project was to develop a participatory education program that integrates literacy development with health promotion. The preliminary research reported in these notes focused on women's reasons for participating in the project and on the effects of their participation.

The Work Values of Marginalized Adult Learners (1998)

This survey assessed the work-related values of one hundred and thirty six marginalized adult learners enrolled in 8 Adult Basic Education courses. The results revealed that ethnicity influenced both work values and adult life roles. As well, although respondents' rankings of work values did not differ by gender, females attached greater importance to values and life roles.

One purpose of the 3-year study reported in this paper was to understand the lives of participants in adult literacy programs in a large urban center in Canada from the perspectives of the program participants themselves. A second purpose involved asking them about perceived changes in them and in their lives as they participated in literacy programs.

Numeracy in the Adult ESL Classroom (1996)

This article examines numeracy for adults learning English as a second language (ESL) as well as for those who teach them. It focuses on learners with low literacy skills and provides curriculum ideas and resources for use in the classroom. While many suggestions are based on the author's experiences in teaching adult immigrants in Canada, they are applicable to adult ESL instruction in other English-speaking countries.
