My Journey to the Learning Centre (2010)

Located in a small community southwest of Montreal in Quebec, the Huntingdon Learning Centre is a nonprofit organization that offers workshops, in both French and English, in basic reading, writing and mathematics. It also offers courses in both English and French as a second language for newcomers to the area.

This document describes the experience of one adult learner whose life was changed by the programs offered at the centre.

Arnie Stewart Award 2011 – Keith Allen [Video - 1:47] (2011)

The Arnie Stewart Individual Achievement Award is presented by Laubach Literacy Ontario at its annual conference.

The 2011 winner was not able to attend the conference, so he videotaped his acceptance speech, which was shared at the conference. In it, he thanks those who have helped him, including all his tutors, the people who nominated him for the award, and the North Bay Literacy Council.

Rock Brisson : Yukon Learner Series (2008)

This book is part of a series published by the Yukon Literacy Coalition, focusing on people who overcame hardships to learn to read.

The learner profiled here grew up in foster homes and had changed schools 10 times by the time he was 13. He left school and turned to alcohol. He eventually stopped drinking and worked hard to provide for his family, successfully hiding the fact that he couldn’t read or write.
