Silent Words: English 130 Novel Study (2012)

This guide has been designed to accompany the novel “Silent Words,” by Ruby Slipperjack. Set in northwestern Ontario in the 1960s, the novel tells the story of a young Ojibway boy and his journey of self-discovery.

The first section of the guide offers pre-reading activities that set the stage for reading the novel, including making predictions about what the book will be about and discussing the significance of the title.

The Northern Edge (Edition Six) Study Guide (2008)

The NWT Literacy Council produced this study guide for adult educators and adult learners. It offers learning activities for four of the stories from the sixth edition of The Northern Edge, an online newspaper for adult learners produced by the NWT Literacy Council. The Northern Edge covers stories about the north and celebrates the lives of those who live North of 60.

How To Kit - Election 2008 (2008)

Literacy instructors can use this election how-to resource, developed by the Northwest Literacy Council, to teach their students about the election process. Elections come with their own vocabulary, jargon and challenges. They can be intimidating to a learner who is not familiar with the process, but elections are also a great opportunity to build literacy skills.

Photo Stories (2007)

This text, developed by the NWT Literacy Council for a basic English course, contains five "photo stories." The stories can be used to initiate discussion on northern topics like dog racing, fishing, sun dogs, the Arctic Winter Games, and crossing the Mackenzie River on a ferry. The instructor can select the handouts needed to teach or reinforce different concepts.

Two Old Women: An Alaska Legend of Betrayal, Courage and Survival is a great novel for the 120 level. It is approximately at the Grade 6 reading level according to the Fry readability score. In this story, the author recounts a story about hardship and triumph that has been passed on from mothers to daughters for many generations.
