Rick Mercer Report: Peter Gzowski Invitational Golf Tournament for Literacy [Video - 9:09] (2010)

In 1986, Canadian broadcaster and journalist Peter Gzowski organized a golf tournament to raise funds for literacy. That tournament, the Peter Gzowski Invitational (PGI), evolved into a nation-wide annual event that has raised more than $12 million to support literacy initiatives in the provinces and territories where the PGIs are held.

This video features Paralympic gold medallist Paul Rosen speaking at the 2012 Nova Scotia Peter Gzowski Invitational (PGI) Golf Tournament.

In an emotional and often funny speech, Rosen describes how he lagged behind his schoolmates in reading and writing, then spent much of his adult life covering up his lack of literacy skills. At 50, he enrolled in a class and was soon reading with confidence and enthusiasm.

The collection includes stories, poems, and some artwork. The contributions cover a broad range of topics, including personal experiences, hobbies, social issues, and history.

This is the 13th edition of “Our Side of the Mountain.”

Write On! Student Literature: Expressing our thoughts and opinions - Issue 7 (2012)

This is an annual publication that showcases writing by adult learners at Literacy Unlimited, a community organization based in the Montreal suburb of Pointe Claire.

This year, all learners were invited to submit a piece about a “first” that they had experienced. Their responses include descriptions of the first day on a new job, the birth of a child, and the first time playing softball.

More than Words on Paper: Building Literacy One Reader at a Time [Video - 21:10] (2009)

Prepared by Literacy Volunteers of Quebec (LVQ), this video explores the nature of literacy and explores the reasons why people have low literacy skills.

“Low literacy” doesn’t necessarily refer to an inability to read and write. Instead, it refers to a range of difficulties people may experience every day, including problems with reading, writing, doing math, or balancing a budget.
