This is a collection of stories by seniors based in the Harvey, New Brunswick area. Stories are great gifts. Stories tell us who we are and where we came from. With the stories of our past, we are better prepared for the future. The goal of Learning for Life is to build on the knowledge we have acquired, to continue to acquire knowledge, and to share our knowledge with others. These stories achieve this.
This series of six readers is based on the book The Hitch-Hiker, published in 1995. These readers provide a closer look at Newfoundland and Labrador. Each book begins with a Vocabulary listing the new words that learners might have difficulty pronouncing, and ends with a series of Questions to test comprehension and then topics For Discussion and Study. These Labradorians give us their oral history through heartfelt stories and reminiscences. Also included are several poems, an interesting section on Traditional Home Remedies, as well as Helpful Hints
This book of stories was produced by learners from five different groups of northern Manitoba and is meant for learners. Chapter One was produced by the Flin Flon Community Adult Centre and The Pas Friendship Centre; Chapter Two, by the Ma Mow We TaK Adult Basic Education Program in Thompson; Chapter Three, by the YWCA Literacy Through Craft Program in Thompson; and Chapter Four, by the Swan River Adult Literacy Program.
Linda Beaupré`s illustrated poem describes the joys and sorrows of being a teenage, single mother. Lonely Child is the story of a young mother struggling with single parenthood. The author, Linda Beaupre, is enrolled as a learner in East End Literacy, a community-based reading centre in downtown Toronto. It was here that she was encouraged to write about her life experience.
