Report of the Adult Student Pathways to College Post-secondary Programs Project

These delayed entrants take multiple pathways to college that include participating in courses or programs to upgrade their academic skills.
20 Years of Independent Studies at Frontier College
Full Circle is a book that celebrates and documents the achievements of Frontier College's Independent Studies Program over the past 20 years. The I.S. Program was designed to fill a need "to find ways to integrate all marginalized people, but especially people labelled 'disabled', into a welcoming community of learning."
This report is about ten Canadian people who were categorized as Level 1 and Level 2 adults, according to the International Adult Literacy Survey (IALS). It talks about the types of informal learning that goes on in their lives and how they practice their literacy skills. Included is an overview of the project, ten stories or narratives about some remarkable adults who have discovered learning in their own way, and annotated bibliography.
The number of Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) students in Ontario colleges categorized as “Other” has risen dramatically, by 89%. There was little data about this growing number of students. Having a demographic profile of “Others” and information about their specific training needs would help LBS programs provide the right mix of support services and programming.
The portfolio process outlined in this resource was designed to give literacy practitioners a practical way to showcase student success. It is intended for use with the Nova Scotia Adult Learning Program (ALP) and the Intake Assessment Tools used in adult education classes throughout that province.
