Tutoring

This Handbook is the result of a "best of the best" approach that can be used by tutors, trainers and literacy practitioners in general. The authors hope it is a tremendous resource that can help achieve higher levels of literacy throughout Ontario. It could also be used elsewhere, with the same results.

This is the fifth collection of written works by learners enrolled in the Volunteer Literacy Tutor Program, a joint project of Literacy Central Vancouver Island and the Nanaimo campus of Vancouver Island University. It was launched on September 8, 2010, in honour of International Literacy Day.

Based in northeast Edmonton, Alberta, the Widening Access for Adult Literacies project involved a variety of approaches to achieving its goal, including working with community agencies to create literacy friendly environments; integrating support for literacies development into existing community programs and services; and offering adult literacy groups and tutoring in inviting, accessible locations.

This guide is intended for tutors using the fourth and final module in the learning and teaching package prepared by the Newfoundland and Labrador Laubach Literacy Council for use with older adults. It is to be used with the equivalent student skill book.

The term “homework club” generally refers to an after-school program where tutors offer homework and reading support for a group of students on a regular basis. Frontier College, a national literacy organization, has been organizing such programs in every part of Canada since 1984 and this guide is based upon the knowledge gained through that experience.
