This document outlines a community-based research project developed by the students in a senior-level sociology course at Mount Allison University, in partnership with the Tantramar Family Resource Centre in Sackville, New Brunswick. The project examined the ways in which families experience and define literacy; how they interact with literacy resources; and how community literacy services might better suit their needs.
This document grew out of the New Brunswick Forum on Family Literacy Project, launched in 2008. The project included a literature review; the development of a working definition of family literacy; and a two-day knowledge sharing forum.
This resource manual was compiled for use during a five-day institute on learning disabilities, held in 2007 at Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick.
The manual contains sections on the definition of learning disabilities (LDs); the roles of screening, assessment and psychological reports in determining the presence of an LD; decoding and fluency in reading; reading comprehension; and written expression.
A Practitioner's Guide to Family Literacy Sessions With Parents of Infants, Toddlers and PreSchoolers
This is a guide for community-based practitioners who want to deliver literacy workshops to parents of infants, toddlers and preschoolers. The authors encourage practitioners to tailor their workshops to meet the needs and interests of their particular group.
