Silent Words: English 130 Novel Study (2012)

This guide has been designed to accompany the novel “Silent Words,” by Ruby Slipperjack. Set in northwestern Ontario in the 1960s, the novel tells the story of a young Ojibway boy and his journey of self-discovery.

The first section of the guide offers pre-reading activities that set the stage for reading the novel, including making predictions about what the book will be about and discussing the significance of the title.

Formative and Summative Evaluation of the “Learning through Partnerships: A Pan-Northern Gathering Project”

In 2010, the literacy councils of the Northwest Territories, the Yukon, and Nunavut joined forces for a project that would culminate two years later in a three-day forum on adult learning, literacy, and skills development in northern Canada. The goals of the project, entitled Made in the North, were to explore northern-directed policies and practices that support adult learning; develop partnerships; and share knowledge.

This curriculum unit is part of a series developed for use in adult literacy and basic education programs.

The authors note that teaching poetry at the English 120 level presents many of the same challenges as it does at the 110 level, but the task is a little easier because learners at this level are more independent readers and writers.

Rally for Literacy (2012)

In 2011, Lachlan MacLean of Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories approached the NWT Literacy Council with a proposal for a fundraising project: a car rally that would take him around one-third of the world, from England to Mongolia. This how-to kit uses the Rally for Literacy as the basis for activities designed to strengthen Literacy and Essential Skills.
