Prior Learning Assessment

This document describes Trade Essentials, a three-year research project funded by the Pan-Canadian Innovations Fund and the PEI Department of Innovations and Advanced Learning.

The goal of the project is to build Essential Skills (ES) and Technical Skills (TS) inventory tools; develop a contextualized curriculum for ES intervention; and come up with tools and a process to help apprentices get recognition for their prior learning.

The Trade Essentials program was designed to help clients improve their essential skills so they are better prepared to advance in their chosen career. The goal is to provide a seamless learning path to trades certification.

This handbook is designed to help skilled trades journeypersons manage the learning of their apprentices who are using a professional skills record (PSR). The PSR is used to provide a fair and objective assessment tool to record the apprentice’s skills and learning.

This document is the result of a call from the Canadian Council on Learning’s Work and Learning Knowledge Centre (WLKC) for a synthesis research project on work-related informal learning in order to develop an evidence base about such learning.
