Goal Setting – Workbook (2012)

This document is part of the “Career – Life – Work” series. Produced by the NWT Literacy Council, the series consists of four instructor’s manuals and six workbooks, dealing with topics that affect both personal and work life.

The workbook sets out a six-step process for setting goals. The first step is to write down the goal, while the second is to determine whether there is a genuine, intense desire to reach that goal.

A WEM partnership case study

The success of Essential Skills (ES) training in the workplace led Kleysen Transport to develop a whole new vision of how the company should operate.

Based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Kleysen Transport employs 500 people across Canada. With help from Workplace Education Manitoba (WEM), Kleysen had identified and responded to ES gaps among its employees that were affecting workplace performance.

A WEM partnership case study

Color Ad Packaging in Winnipeg, Manitoba, is using Essential Skills (ES) training to decrease waste in its plant.

Established in 2000, Color Ad makes packaging products for such clients as Lindt Chocolates, and is Canada’s largest producer of popcorn bags. While the company was experiencing strong growth, both the printing and the bag-making sides of company operations were experiencing unaccountable levels of waste.

Building Integrated Skills – a Model for Action (1992)

In the early 1990s, workers in the unionized sector of the British Columbia construction industry were finding that changing technology required them to read more difficult materials and to use more complex mathematical concepts. SkillPlan was developed in March 1991 to improve workers' basic skills to meet the demands of the new technology.
